Viewing positional data against opponents can help you make better decisions betting by identifying potential weak spots for a team. In today's article, I will walk through how to use Explore+ on your Desktop computer to look at positional data vs opponents.

For the first example, I will walkthrough this process for NHL and specifically how to view defenseman stats against teams in the NHL. This process works the same for all sports. The first step is to log in to your Pine Sports account and look for the "Explore Player & Team Stats" button, and then click "NHL".

Once you have clicked NHL, it will open up your Explore Dashboard for just NHL. You will see 4 main options: Player Stats, Fantasy Stats, Game Stats, and Team Stats. In order to view Positional data, we need to look in the 'Fantasy Stats' section as all four of these are unique data sets. Team and Game stats will not show you player positions and Player Stats only shows a player's dominant position, it does not account for changes to starting line combinations.

I want to preface the following that NHL Line Combinations are fluid, and change often either due to injuries or coaching changes. Line Combinations can often change during a game. These factors make collecting positional data for Forwards EXTREMELY difficult and inconsistent. The following steps are what I would consider as the 'Best Practice' that I have found. This is not really an issue when looking at defensemen, just forwards

Now that you are in the Fantasy Stats 'View' section, lets look at the following example. To Start I want to look at how many shots on goal the Dallas Stars allow to Defenseman per game this season. First, let's list out the steps with the screenshot to follow.

Step 1) Click 'Visualize' at the top.
Step 2) Click 'Scatter' near the top of the now viewable input section.
Step 3) Enter the Query EXACTLY as shown. This is very case sensitive.
Season == '2022-2023' and Player - Position - DraftKings == 'D' and Opponent == 'Dallas'
Step 4) Change 'X' to equal 'Date'
Step 5) Change 'Y' to equal 'Player - Shots On Goal'
Step 6) Change 'Aggregation' to equal 'Sum'
Step 7) Change 'Trendline' to equal 'lowess'

Before I show the results, there are a few of these steps that are personal preference. If you prefer to view Bar Charts instead of Scatter Plots, that is entirely up to you. The rest of the steps besides are the same except you would omit the Trendline. I prefer to use the DraftKings player position data. In my experience it is a little more accurate, MOST of the time. Not always. Lastly, if you do view it in Scatter plot you can use OLS trendline instead of lowess. OLS draws a line through the overall mean, whereas lowess tries to draw the trend through as many data points as possible so it moves over periods of time. Here are the results!

As you can see, the Stars have been averaging about 9-10 shots on goal allowed per game to opposing defensemen. The trend has increased recently, allowing 12 and 13 in 2 of their last 3 games. Now let's compare this with the NHL overall. To do this, we only need to change a few things.

Step 1) Change over to 'Bar' instead of 'Scatter'
Step 2) Remove the Opponent piece from the query
Step 3) Change 'X' to equal 'Opponent'

This shows us that Dallas has allowed a total of 328 shots on goal to defensemen over the course of the season, which ranks them 5th most in the league and fairly above average which appears to be around 290. Anaheim allows the most at 376 for the season and the Wild allow the fewest, at only 236 this season.

Now let's do one last example, which will be to compare two teams' trends for shots on goal allowed to defensemen.

Step 1) Go back to Scatter
Step 2) In the query lets add to the end the following:
"and Opponent in ('NY Rangers', 'Tampa Bay')
Step 3) change 'X' back to 'Date'
Step 4) in 'Group' add 'Opponent'

Now we can compare the trends between the Rangers and the Lightning in terms of allowing shots on goal to defensemen. The green line represents the Rangers, who have allowed fewer than 6 SOG to D-men in 5 of their last 6 games and the orange represents the Lightning, who have allowed 8+ at the same rate.

This same process can be done to view Centers (use 'C' instead of 'D') or Wingers (use 'W'). This process also works in NBA, NFL, and MLB. Be sure to reach out on Discord if you have more questions!
