Pick #1:  UNDER THE TOTAL (139.5) -110 at FANDUEL

While Georgetown is in the bottom half of the Big East, Coppin State may be the worst team in the nation. That makes for a not-so-pretty affair with points not coming from many directions.

The struggling Georgetown Hoyas will get the chance to pick up a win at home against one of the worst teams in the country when they host the Coppin State Eagles on Tuesday night.

Georgetown came up short in its last two games, dropping contests against TCU and Syracuse. The Hoyas are still massive favorites in the college basketball odds over Coppin State, which is coming off a 76-45 loss to George Washington on Saturday.

While these two teams both have obvious flaws, they also play a similar style that should clue us in as to what tonight’s game will look like.

The Coppin State Eagles are arguably in contention for the worst team in Division I college basketball this season. The Eagles have just one win, which came at home over UMBC last month. They're bad on defense but even worse offensively, scoring a paltry 55.1 points per game so far on the season.

The Eagles don’t have a real scoring threat outside of senior forward Justin Winston, who is averaging 13.4 points per game and has at least flashed the ability to lead the offense.

Winston and the rest of the Coppin State attack aren’t aided by the fact that the team plays at one of the slowest paces in the nation, likely an attempt to keep the team in games against superior competition.

In theory, the Eagles should get some respite against a Georgetown Hoyas team that is hardly a defensive dynamo itself. The Hoyas are allowing 73.7 points per game, and have given up that number against one of the weakest schedules in the nation this season.

Realistically, however, Georgetown will probably help Coppin State play into its own worst tendencies. The Hoyas are also on the more deliberate side when it comes to tempo, which means they won’t be doing anything to speed up the game. This will be a contest fought over a relatively limited number of possessions.

Georgetown will get the better of those opportunities. The Hoyas are competent on the offensive end, with Jayden Epps (18.9 ppg) leading four players in double figures, the kind of output Coppin State could only dream of.

Still, we shouldn’t look at Georgetown as an explosive offensive unit. The Hoyas are averaging 77.8 ppg against very weak opposition. Coppin State certainly fits that bill, but we shouldn’t expect too much of a boost when compared to the kinds of teams Georgetown has already been competing with this season.

Coppin State has only scored as many as 60 points three times this year, and almost certainly won’t hit that number against a major conference opponent that plays at a slow pace. Meanwhile, Georgetown should do well on offense, but will also be drawn into a gritty game. The Eagles may be awful but have only given up 80 points once this season.

The result should be a low-scoring game that is less than entertaining for viewers. For bettors, however, this is an excellent chance to attack an Under that has been set at a surprisingly reasonable 139.5 points. Even an 80-60 final seems out of reach in this matchup, so I’m happy to take the Under tonight.

Let's take the UNDER of 139.5 tonight!  Best of Luck to all, and I hope I see you at the window....

Thanks,
