It was revealed earlier today that San Antonio legend Manu Ginobili is returning to the Spurs. But before you get too excited, don't expect the Argentinian superstar to be on the floor again facing off in games. Instead, he's being hired as a special advisor to basketball operations. Basically, Manu is going to be helping the young Spurs line-up perfect their skills and get in fine form for the upcoming season.

Ginobili's involvement with the Spurs couldn't come soon enough. When you look at the last few seasons for the team, you see a formerly great team that is really struggling. They ended last season with a record of 33-39, ending in tenth place in the Western Conference.

Just a few years ago, they concluded the season with 69 wins. That's quite a fall from grace for one of the greatest franchises in NBA history.

What will Ginobili bring to the team? A lot of experience, especially when it comes to post-season playing. Ginobili helped secure four rings for the Spurs and he was a two-time All-Star. While his point total pales in comparison to other, more showy players, Manu was always a very smart, very reliable role player who had a high two-and-three-point percentage.

The fact that Ginobili had a 49% two-point percentage (and 44% three-point percentage) in his final season is quite remarkable. He was still putting up impressive numbers even as he neared retirement.

Manu Ginobili was a talented, brilliant basketball player. He remained cool under pressure and truly understood the mechanics and nuances of basketball. That intelligence will be needed to pull the Spurs out of the hole they are continually sinking into.
